Equipment Operator (Level 2)

Department: SPR - Outside Operations
Location: Sun Peaks, BC
Position Type: Summer Season

Do you enjoy working outdoors in fresh mountain air? We are seeking passionate and motivated individuals to join our Trail Crew as Equipment Operators this Summer. This position requires technical skills, safety awareness, and environmental consciousness. The Equipment Operator will play a critical role in helping to maintain hiking trails, ski runs and other areas in the resort using ‘heavy-duty equipment. Landscaping, cattle control, sign maintenance and erosion control are also part of your daily activities. Bike parks, golf rounds and lake days await you on your days off. Compensation Information: $27.30 per hour

Physical Requirement: Heavy; work activities involve handling loads up to 35kg; predominantly in an outdoor setting.

This job position requires physical presence at the designated location.

Skills you bring with you:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience operating Heavy equipment: Excavators, Bulldozers, Backhoes, Front end loaders, etc.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience of Winch assisted grooming equipment as well as conventional snow grooming equipment and a minimum of 5 years’ experience working with excavators in a mountain environment
  • Mature person with a strong work ethic and interpersonal skills
  • A team player who shares ideas and delivers solutions for Guests and their on-mountain experiences
  • A good listener and someone who can adapt to day-to-day changes
  • Safety conscious and experienced operating all types of industry equipment
  • Knowledge of the snowmaking system and provides support during snowmaking season (moving snowmaking equipment, preparation of early season slopes, production management, etc.)
  • A proven communicator who mentors others by sharing industry knowledge and Best Practices
  • Excellent time management and planning skills
  • Basic understanding of Risk Management within industry during year-round operations
  • Strong mechanical aptitude is considered an asset
  • Able to complete daily reports neatly, concisely, and legibly
  • Experience with special events venue preparation
  • Able to work shifts and odd hours with overtime when required. Must be able to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays) as required by summer operating hours, special events and Fire Danger Rating
  • Able to think, react and communicate under pressure, both written and verbal
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Sun Peaks physical plant and summer operations
  • A good listener, able to follow instruction closely, etc.
  • Must have a keen eye for close detail while still dealing with a larger scope
  • Willing and prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be in good physical shape, able to undertake constant hard physical work, and able to safely lift heavy objects
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and clean abstract (we will require a consent form signed so abstract can be checked)
  • Highly experienced operating all of the summer trails equipment
  • A “hands on” operator who leads by example
  • Previous Wildfire Suppression experience with valid S-100 certificate and OFA-1 as minimum
  • Supply own CSA approved above ankle footwear, sunscreen and appropriate clothing

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operation of various equipment within the fleet at Sun Peaks Resort
  • Summer Operations maintenance with various excavators (1.7 Ton to 20 Ton), but also familiar with operation of Rubber Tire Backhoe, Skid Steer, Excavators, Aebi (including sweeper attachment, post pounding, flail mower) 4x4 Trucks and Quads
  • Provide input and solutions for the various teams within the Operations Department to deliver exceptional outcomes for the guests. These teams include Winter Grooming, Terrain Parks, Snowmaking, Lift Operations, Vehicle Maintenance, Lift Maintenance and others
  • Daily pre-start checks on equipment, grease and clean the equipment, report and contain spills as per our Spill Response Plan and Environmental Management System (ISO 14001)
  • Work closely with the Bike Park Department to build and maintain Mountain Bike Trails that exceed industry standards (PTBA, IMBA, Whistler Standard) and that are considerate of exceptional Guest Experiences
  • Accountability for safe operation of fleet equipment and communicate any mechanical concerns with the Vehicle Maintenance Department
  • Accurate, neat compilation of all relevant reports to other teams in the Operations department
  • Communicate all necessary information to all operators during pre-work meetings and at shift changeovers
  • Ensure that equipment inventories are maintained and tools are available when needed
  • Daily progress tracking of work to ensure timely completion of the task before starting another
  • Monitor work being done to ensure that all WorkSafe regulations and SOG’s are followed daily and ensure that other crews are aware of safety concerns in and around the area you are working
  • To assist other departments when required
  • To treat co-workers and company equipment with the utmost respect
  • Communicate problems, issues or “near misses” with your Manager as soon as possible
  • Report Accidents or Incidents to your Manager immediately and be available to assist on investigations if necessary
  • Arrive at work on time and completely prepared for working outside in all conditions, (proper footwear, clothing, food/water, rain gear, PPE, and well rested)
  • Daily record keeping; to include vehicle check sheets, fuel logs, etc.
  • Ensure that you have signed in and out of Payworks System every workday
  • Other jobs as assigned by the Management for Summer Slopes
  • Prompt return to work after breaks from work. Any food or supplies required for breaks will be taken to the worksite since breaks will be from time work stops until the time it starts again and does not include travel time
  • Meet with Summer Slopes Management at the start of each day and review work list, identify priorities, etc.
  • Slope Manager or Lead Hand will be point of contact for safety meetings and review equipment needs, special instructions, PPE requirements, information updates, weather, concerns and successes, etc., setting daily completion goals
